Tragedy has struck Morocco in the form of a powerful earthquake. With a magnitude of 6.8 this latest earthquake in Morocco has left a trail of destruction and despair. The toll is heart-breaking, with over 2,500 lives lost, and the numbers continue to rise. Many of the fatalities are in hard-to-reach areas south of Marrakech, where immediate relief efforts are challenged by difficult terrain and limited access.
Emergency workers are in a desperate race against time to free those trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The earthquake struck shortly after 11 pm local time, causing widespread panic and devastation in central Marrakech. Even far from the epicentre, in the rural town of Ighil in the Al Haouz province, some 44 miles south of Marrakech, the impact has been severe.
The Morocco earthquake of 1960 was the last time the country experienced such extensive devastation, with reported deaths numbering over 12,000, or more than 35,000 losing their homes and livelihoods.
