There are 153 million orphans around the world, according to UNICEF. These children are the most vulnerable and innocent members of our society, and whilst some orphans live with relatives or family friends, many are abandoned on the streets.
Though our own children are lucky enough to grow up in a safe, loving, and supportive environment, orphans find life a constant battle. Many of these young children have no one to care for them and spend their days struggling to survive, whether that be looking for a meal or safe shelter for the night. They are often malnourished and live in highly dangerous conditions, without education and occasionally even having to care for younger siblings. These children are vulnerable, but we can make a difference.
Every child has the right to a carefree childhood full of fun, laughter, and love, though many orphans have little or none of this. No human being should live in constant worry and fear, especially not children. We don’t need to be parents to understand that children should feel cared for and valued.
UK Islamic Mission is a leading charity in helping orphans around the world.
