The night of Laylat al-Qadr is one of the most powerful nights in the Islamic calendar. Also known as the Night of Power, the night of Laylat al-Qadr carries endless mercy and reward from Allah. Muslims around the world sincerely repent and turn to Allah in prayer. With the month of Ramadan almost at our doorstep, many believers wonder when Laylat al-Qadr will fall, and how to not miss the blessed night.
Laylat al-Qadr is also a time of deep connection with the Lord, and a time to help those in need. It is a night filled with faith and compassion, where actions come together in a meaningful way.
Laylat al-Qadr is the night on which the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him). Allah also tells us in the Quran about the greatness of this night. “Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” [Quran 97:1–3]
Carrying out any form of worship on this night is better than worship performed over more than eighty-three years, with every prayer and act of charity multiplied in reward.
It has been narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) also highlighted the importance of Laylat al-Qadr, saying that “Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Bukhari and Muslim
This promise of forgiveness is what unites Muslims to come together to draw closer to Allah.
One of the most unique aspects of Laylat al-Qadr is that the exact date of the night is unknown. The Messenger of Allah has told us to “Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan” (Bukhari), informing us that the night will fall within the last ten nights of Ramadan.
Due to the Islamic calendar being based on the lunar sighting, the exact date of Laylat al-Qadr 2026 will depend on the sighting of the moon at the start of the month of Ramadan.
It is believed that if the exact night of Laylat al-Qadr were to be known, then believers would limit their time of worship to just that one night. However, due to the uncertainty of the exact night, there is encouragement to be consistent in worship and devotion throughout the last ten nights.
It has been narrated by Aisha (RA) “When the last ten nights of Ramadan began, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) would tighten his waist belt, spend the night in worship, and wake his family.” (Bukhari).
The preparation for the night of Laylat al-Qadr begins with intention. A heart that is seeking closeness to Allah is a lot more important than carrying out the actions of worship without intention. Praying extra voluntary prayers and reciting the Quran are all great ways in remembering Allah, all of which carry immense value on this night of decree.
Aisha RA had once asked the Messenger of Allah what she should recite during the time of Laylatul Qadr. His response was “Say: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.” (Tirmidhi)
The short dua is a powerful supplication that reflects on the real essence of Layla al-Qadr. It is the perfect night to ask for forgiveness and plead for the Mercy of Allah for you and all your loved ones.
Islam highly values the act of charity, multiplying its reward during Ramadan. Giving on this night is like giving for more than a thousand months. By offering support to orphans and widows, and those affected by poverty, you are opening the doors to benefit yourself and others beyond the night of Mercy that passes.
Allah tells us in the Quran “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed that grows seven ears; in every ear is a hundred grains.” [Quran 2:261]

A small donation given in sincerity, or a dua made with intention, can bring forward a reward beyond our imagination. The doors of mercy are open for everyone, irrespective of any past or current deeds that are done.
