The Deadliest Earthquake in Two Decades
As people slept, the most lethal earthquake to strike Afghanistan in the last 20 years occurred. Shortly after 1:30 am, hundreds of homes were destroyed by the 6.1 magnitude and 51 km depth of the quake. The impact was so strong that tremors were felt from as far away as India and Pakistan.
Regardless of size, earthquakes are always detrimental to rural areas in which dwellings are poorly built and unstable. Therefore, you can imagine the devastating impact of an earthquake of this scale. In fact, the current death toll is only set to rise due to some villages and remote areas not yet being accounted for.
Horrific Scenes of Death and Destruction
Locals have recounted screaming in fear as homes collapsed around them. Others have described returning to their homes to find their neighbours wounded or dead. The sound of mourning sweeps the streets of Afghanistan, with many of the deceased being very young children.
Due to the level of depravity throughout Afghanistan, the country isn’t equipped to recover from such a tragedy. The severely injured are going without vital medical care as the local hospital doesn’t have the capacity to handle the disaster. Meanwhile, people have been left starving and homeless as a result of the earthquake and have zero means of rebuilding their shelters or obtaining substantial food. Currently, life in Afghanistan is bleak, to say the least.
