International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. For Muslim women around the world, it holds particular significance as a day to recognise their contributions, advocate for their rights, and challenge stereotypes and biases.
Rooted in the principles of justice, equality, and empowerment, International Women’s Day resonates deeply with the values of Islam, which emphasise the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of gender. Muslim women have played pivotal roles throughout history, from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the present day, in shaping their communities and societies.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Break the Bias,” is especially relevant for Muslim women who often face intersecting forms of discrimination and marginalisation based on their gender, religion, and other identities. It calls on us to challenge stereotypes, dismantle barriers, and promote inclusivity within Muslim communities and beyond.
The Sisters Youth Wing of the UK Islamic Mission will be organising an online webinar on March 9th to honour International Women’s Day. Featured speakers will include Yasmine Adam from the Muslim Association of Britain, discussing ‘The Legacy of Muslim Women Leaders and Their Influence in Modern Times’; Maryam Hussain from UKIM Youth, addressing ‘Empowering Homemakers and Choices Centred on the Home’; and Khadija Umair, Youth Vice President of the European Muslim Council, exploring ‘The Status of Women in Islam’.
Despite the challenges they may face, Muslim women continue to excel and thrive in various fields, including education, business, science, technology, arts, and activism. Their resilience, courage, and determination serve as an inspiration to countless others and highlight the immense potential of Muslim women to effect positive change in the world.
International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Muslim women, amplify their voices, and address the unique challenges they encounter. It is a day to honour the diversity and richness of Muslim women’s experiences and to reaffirm our commitment to supporting their rights and empowerment.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, let us recognise the contributions of Muslim women to their communities, societies, and the world at large. Let us also commit ourselves to creating environments that are inclusive, equitable, and respectful of the rights and dignity of all women, including Muslim women.
Join us in celebrating International Women’s Day and in working towards a world where Muslim women, like all women, can fulfil their potential and live their lives with dignity, freedom, and equality.
