UK Islamic Mission has supported and helped adults and children in Indonesia through several appeals that have seen teams of volunteers working on the ground, such as with those affected by natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.

Indonesia, the world’s largest island country, has a vast history of earthquakes and tsunamis, most notably the crisis in September 2018 when over 2,000 lives were lost as a result of a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami sweeping through Palu. That came shortly after the earthquakes in Lombok, the first (6.4 magnitude) of which occurred on 29 July, resulting in 20 deaths and the displacement of more than 10,000, and the second (7.0 magnitude) a week later on 5 August which saw 563 lives lost and more than 1,000 people injured. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management estimated that over 387,000 people had been displaced because of the earthquake.

UK Islamic Mission wasted no time in answering the call, ensuring that emergency aid (including food parcels, medical supplies, and shelter) reached those who most needed it. Years later, the effects of those natural disasters continue to be felt and the need for humanitarian assistance remains, along with the fact that Indonesia is prone to major earthquakes and tsunamis. Earthquakes of magnitudes 5.0 or lower occur on an almost daily basis, and a major earthquake (around 7.0 magnitude) roughly once a year.

UK Islamic Mission Continues to Help

Our emergency appeals provide for those who are most in need. Indonesia is one of the countries that UK Islamic Mission continues to provide emergency support for in light of the earthquake and tsunami crises. Our charity teams in Indonesia have been working to provide people with nutritional supplies (such as food parcels and safe, clean drinking water), medical supplies and shelter to help keep them safe and warm.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the natural disasters and families have been separated, leaving vulnerable women and children at risk of exploitation. UK Islamic Mission is working hard to ensure that all those at risk are safe, with the hope of reuniting them with their loved ones.

Our Work in Indonesia

How Can We Continue to Help Indonesia?

There are multiple ways in which you can continue to support our efforts in Indonesia. You can choose to donate to our emergency appeals campaigns directly. UK Islamic Mission will distribute funds accordingly and we will keep you updated with the progress that has been made and how your generous donation has helped to make a difference.

Alternatively, by choosing to make your Zakat payment through UK Islamic Mission, we can ensure that this charitable obligation is used in Indonesia. This means that your annual payment will be put towards making sure a young child receives the nutrition they need, that an injured person can receive the medical attention they require, or that a family can have somewhere safe and warm to sleep at night. Your Zakat payment, which is 2.5% of your expendable wealth, can make a huge difference to our brothers and sisters.

As well as donating Zakat, Qurbani donations are also distributed amongst the neediest in Indonesia. Shares of meat are given to those who are without basic food and, for some, this may represent the only meat they eat from one Qurbani to the other. Qurbani comes around just once a year but, when it does, this obligatory form of charity goes a long way to easing the suffering of those living in the most desperate of conditions.

If you would prefer to make a one-off donation to support UK Islamic Mission’s efforts in Indonesia then that, too, will be greatly received. Just some of the vital necessities that your generous donations can help to supply include:

£100 – an emergency survival pack consisting of a food pack, baby supplies, clean drinking water and hygiene kit

£200 – emergency medical supplies for hospitals and camps to treat the sick and injured

£300 – a temporary emergency shelter, food pack and clean drinking water for a family

£500 – will help fund a medical camp, complete with medical supplies, to treat those sick and injured
